The Brain Institute
ZGF Architects
location: Providence St. Vincent Hospital, Portland, Oregon
my role: concept + design

The glass design at the Providence Brain Institute celebrates the uniqueness and technological advancement within this St. Vincent facility. The etched glass wall is a visual respite within the surgical suite for the working doctors and staff. It incorporates digital monitors which display images captured during the surgery. Inspired by neuron networks, the glass pattern glows peacefully, reflecting the delicacy and wonder of the human brain.

About the process: I was lucky to be able to work closely with the brain surgeons at Providence who shared with me gorgeous imagery that their technology can create of the human brain. Hoping to capture the magic that occurs in their practice, as well as provide a soothing backdrop to the intense surgeries performed in this space, I conceptualized and designed the glass pattern and lighting concept. Budget prevented the use of my initial concept to utilize colored LED lighting technology, so I designed a solution that captured the same feeling in a simple, inexpensive way.
